Ozempic is a well-known brand name for a medicine called semaglutide. It's a shot given to adults with Type 2 diabetes to help control their blood sugar levels. Ozempic isn't the same as insulin, nor does it replace it.
Ozempic is made by a company called Novo Nordisk. They also make Rybelsis and Wegovy, which are similar drugs. Officially, Ozempic is not for weight loss; it's approved to help people with Type 2 diabetes. But, some doctors prescribe it to help with weight loss.
Side Effects:
Ozempic is part of a group of medicines known as GLP-1 agonists. These medicines act like a hormone in the stomach that helps lower blood sugar after eating. Additionally, they stop the liver from making too much sugar and help people feel full longer.
Like all medicines, Ozempic has side effects. The most common ones include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation. However, Ozempic can also cause rare but serious side effects like changes in vision, allergic reactions, and pancreatitis. It also carries a strong warning (called a black box warning) about a risk of certain types of thyroid tumors. When used correctly, Ozempic is usually safe, but some people, especially those allergic to its ingredients, with a condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, or at risk of a thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma, shouldn't take it. Patients may notice that, after stopping Ozempic, they experience higher blood sugar, greater appetite and weight gain.
Basis of Ozempic Lawsuits
One of the key lawsuits against Ozempic was filed by a woman from Louisiana claiming that Ozempic use led to the development of gastroparesis, which is also called stomach paralysis. This condition slows down or even stops the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. In this particular case in Louisiana, stomach paralysis arising from the use of Ozempic caused the plaintiff to vomit excessively and even lose teeth.
Her lawsuit involves Ozempic and another diabetes medication called Mounjaro. Due to her severe stomach paralysis, she had to be hospitalized for intense stomach pain, burning feeling in her gastrointestinal tract, and vomiting undigested food. Others are also taking legal action against the makers of Ozempic due to similar conditions.
Gastroparesis can cause major problems, like:
Ozempic has also been connected to additional severe health problems. JAMA Internal Medicine published a study in August 2022 that suggested a correlation between Ozempic use and an increased risk of gallbladder problems, like gallstones and acute gallbladder disease. The study was conducted with information gathered from the FDA Adverse Reporting System. Another study published by JAMA Internal Medicine in October 2023 suggested use of GLP-1 agonists is also correlated with increased risk of pancreatitis in diabetic patients.
Symptoms of gallbladder issues can include:

Key Legal Issues
